In the 1960s and 1970s EMPI was one of the best-known wheel manufacturers on the US VW accessory market.

Volkswagen had the Lemmerz wheel, which could be chosen as an option when buying a new car. EMPI produced a similar model under the name Sprintstar, which was originally made completely of steel.
