If you need to have a key made, the key maker will give you a key that differs from the original Volkswagen key. Now you can order the correct key blank and have it cut by the key maker.
For most years the correct original Volkswagen key is still available, although the model may have changed slightly over the years.
Volkswagen gave each profile a specific letter or letter combination, whereby some profiles have different letters or letter combinations that are nevertheless identical to each other, which is very confusing, but there must have been a reason for it at the time. The profile designation was also stamped in the lock at a place not directly visible. With this profile designation and the serial number (e.g. SG240 or SC153) you could order a key at the time.
The various key profiles are not interchangeable. If you need an SC key for the left door and an SE key for the ignition, you will never be able to operate both locks with one key. Operating all locks with one key was not always the case. In the fifties the ignition lock could differ from the doors. An extra key was often required to lock the engine lid.
Always carefully compare the shape and the position of the grooves on both sides between the old key and the image on the website.
