When buying a new Volkswagen you had a choice of many extra accessories, many of which were already prepared so they could also be retrofitted. If, for example, you chose to retrofit fog lights, a place was reserved on the dashboard for the control switch. This reserved place was fitted with a blanking plate if this option was not fitted at the factory.

As most Volkswagens were not fitted with all the special equipment, the switch positions on the dashboard would also not be used and were sealed with a blanking plate.

The blanking plate mentioned here ensures that the open hole for the switch is cleanly sealed again, as was done at the factory.
