Behind the speaker grille there is a metal mesh that protects the speaker, if one is installed. Volkswagen never fitted speakers as standard; it was always an optional extra. But the place where this speaker was to be fitted was already prepared and carefully lined with a protective metal grille behind it.

If you have decided to fit a clock in the grille, you need this protective grille in addition to the grille, although you should always make the cut-out for the clock yourself. With the standard chrome grille the mesh is already included and therefore serves as a replacement.
