Modern vehicles have numerous storage options that make efficient use of every available space. It used to be different; our Volkswagen had to make do with the glove box. If you were lucky, you could simply keep the road map in the door panel pocket. The accessory industry responded cleverly to this very early on with many extra storage options. The most popular accessory was a rack that could be fitted under the dashboard. Various manufacturers brought out numerous versions; the Ra-Bambus company was by far the best known.

Ra-Bambus used a wooden frame wrapped in bamboo that formed the base in a diamond pattern. On many brands the base consisted of a plastic or wooden surround, creating a dark hole that filled with dust in no time. With the Ra-Bambus design you had no problems with accumulated dust and a natural way of lighting. Unfortunately this design also had a drawback: you could only put large things in it, small things fell through. Later the bamboo outer edge was replaced with ivory-coloured plastic wire, where the base remained bamboo, which was later fully replaced with plastic wire. Plastic was much stronger than bamboo, so broken bamboo bases became a thing of the past. The Ra-Bambus design is still available today, no longer as an original but as a reproduction, as it was available in the 50s, 60s and 70s. You can choose between an authentic bamboo rack or the most famous Ra-Bambus version made of plastic wire. The racks are supplied complete with mounting hardware and, on the plastic version, with a Ra-Bambus reproduction badge (except VW Bus).
