On the Volkswagen Beetle up to 12/1953 and on the unique brake system of the Volkswagen Bus, the brake fluid reservoir is screwed directly onto the master cylinder, at the time a perfect solution with the least risk of leaks. This is also why this brake system is often used in buggies and all kinds of other custom creations.

In the later years of the Volkswagen Beetle, the Karmann Ghia and VW Thing models used a reservoir located elsewhere in the car.

On the newest Volkswagen Bus it is slightly different. In the last months of Volkswagen Bus production the master cylinder reservoir is filled directly, which was no longer possible with the production of the Panorama Bus for reasons of space. The reservoir is filled using a filler container located elsewhere in the car.

It is important that the reservoir is free of leaks, which should be checked regularly. The reservoirs for the Volkswagen Beetle between 1/1954 and 7/1960 are made of metal with the optional cap. All other reservoirs are supplied with the cap where applicable.
