The distributor cap transfers the ignition spark to the spark plug lead, so it is understandable that badly burned contacts make the engine run worse or stop altogether.

Check the distributor cap for wear every 5,000 km and replace it if necessary together with the rotor - these parts wear out.

Bosch distributors (for original applications)
Bosch was the supplier to Volkswagen from the start. Most Volkswagens are fitted with a Bosch distributor. It is easy to check: the Bosch logo and Bosch part number are always marked on the distributor.

In recent years, imitation distributors have also come onto the market that resemble the original Bosch in terms of cap, rotor and contact points. The imitation has no Bosch or VW logo, but often the brand or part number of the manufacturer. All reproductions use cap 4002063 (or B-quality 4002030) and rotor 4002032.

Garbe-Lahmeyer distributors (for original applications)
In the early 1960s sales were so high that Bosch could no longer supply the entire production for VW, so during that period Volkswagen turned to Garbe-Lahmeyer. Two in-house brands were fitted during this time, so you may have a Garbe-Lahmeyer distributor rather than a Bosch one in your car.

Garbe-Lahmeyer used only the VW reference, and the VW logo was also printed large on the distributor - so no Garbe-Lahmeyer logo or reference, as Bosch always used. These distributors meet the VW/Bosch specifications but use their own cap, rotor and contact points.

009 and 050 distributors
The Bosch 009 and 050 distributors are used for tuning purposes only and owe their names to the Bosch number ending in 009 or 050. Both distributors are 100% centrifugal and were fitted as standard on Porsche engines.

123 distributor
The 123 distributor is an electronic ignition system designed to replace the existing mechanical Volkswagen system, giving you a practically maintenance-free ignition.

There is no number on the 123 distributor to tell the production period; compare the image with the cap of your existing distributor.
