Due to the driving action of the helical gearing, the distributor drive shaft tends to push upwards. This power distributor drive shaft spring ensures that the drive shaft stays in place.
When adjusting the ignition, the clamp must be loosened to rotate the distributor. At this moment, the drive shaft gains space and tries to push itself up. To prevent this, the drive shaft is held in tension with a spring between the drive shaft and the distributor. Without this spring, the drive shaft is no longer held in tension.
Not only the absence of the spring, but also a spring with too little spring tension can cause trouble. We therefore recommend replacing the spring during overhaul work.
