Starting in August 1970, Volkswagen made a large portion of their crankcases universal, meaning they could be used for 1200 as well as 1300 and 1600 engines. It was attractive for production and financial reasons that the same crankcase could be used for all engines.
Some adjustments were necessary, including the mounting of the oil cooler for 1200 cc engines. On the 1200 cc engines, both the oil cooler and the crankcase had an M6 thread.
To allow the mounting of a 1200 cc oil cooler with M6 bolts, bushings were developed that clamped into the holes for the 8 mm bolts.
