Volkswagen Germany never really got involved with sport exhaust systems; Volkswagen Mexico, on the other hand, engaged with the large number of manufacturers already active in the field of sport exhausts for air-cooled Volkswagens. When the GT Motorsport came onto the market, there was not a single header exhaust that made use of the space under the rear valance. With the GT Motorsport, VW Mexico had a bestseller. There were even times when this exhaust was produced more than the original model. Even today it is the best-selling sport exhaust for the Volkswagen Beetle and the Karmann Ghia. The combination of a header for more engine power and efficiency and the use of the space under the rear valance made it a success.

The GT Motorsport exhaust is available in black coating with chrome tips and completely in polished stainless steel.

The stainless steel version is not only nicer to look at, but also lasts a lifetime, which cannot be said of the black-coated version.

The sound is much heavier than the original, but still bearable, which is due to the combination of a central front muffler with end mufflers in the exhaust pipes, as was originally the case.

The outlets have a diameter of 50 mm, which gives a robust appearance compared with standard 35 mm pipes. The exhausts are supplied without mounting accessories and without a heater hose; order these separately.

Note: The exhaust pipes must not touch the rear valance. In most cases the rear valance has already been replaced with a B-quality valance with shallower recesses than the original or A-quality valance. It is also possible that when fitting a new gearbox mount the engine is positioned slightly higher. In most cases the problem is solved by a slight adjustment of the exhaust.
