On the older Volkswagens the window cranks and the levers for opening the doors and the folding roof are secured with a locking pin. In the later model years this was changed to a screw connection. By using a locking pin, it was possible in a relatively simple way to fasten the assembly invisibly, which benefited the overall finish.

These pins do not wear out quickly, so their loss is the most common reason for purchase.
