Over time the seats sag, causing the upholstery to tear. This tear is caused by the gap that forms between the upholstery and the padding. But the most annoying thing is the poor seating comfort. Check the condition of the seat padding before you start upholstering. New upholstery over old, sagging padding gives a reasonable result at first after fitting, but after a few months the upholstery will start to sag, and you will have to replace the padding.

For many models from various model years of the Volkswagen Beetle and Bus, new padding is available in the same material that Volkswagen used at the time. The padding is made of horsehair.

Between the spring pack and the seat padding there should be a layer of damping felt, which protects the seat padding and helps to counteract the noise produced by the spring packs.
