Behind the pedals is the bulkhead, which is welded between the tube members. Especially at the ends of the tube members the part rusts through quickly. Partly because it is double (inner and outer part), moisture has the chance to cause rust damage. It is therefore advisable to treat the component with a preservative. The bulkhead is supplied as a complete part with an outer and inner part that replaces the original component. On the VW Beetles 1200, 1300 and 1500, Volkswagen used different bulkheads over the years, so it can well happen that this bulkhead differs slightly in shape from the original.

Options: If you weld, protect the welded parts and all bare parts directly with zinc spray. The heat immediately activates rust formation, even though it is not yet visible to the naked eye. Zinc spray is part of the basic equipment of every workshop where a restoration is carried out.
After welding and spraying, the cavities must be treated with an inner coating (preservation), so that these parts are protected against corrosion. Many do this once and do not worry about it further, so that sooner or later rust appears again. If you now apply a new preservation to the cavities every year, you keep the body in top condition.
