When installing front and rear disc brakes, the standard master cylinder must be replaced with a larger one that can deliver more fluid.

The standard master cylinder diameter for the VW Beetle and Karmann Ghia with a single-circuit brake system is 17.46 mm or 19.05 mm, depending on the year of manufacture, and 19.05 mm for vehicles with a dual-circuit brake system.

Larger master cylinders have a cylinder diameter of 22.2 mm for the single-circuit brake system and 20.6 mm for the dual-circuit brake system. This moves more fluid, resulting in an even force over a larger area required for the 4 calipers.

Large master cylinder for single circuit brake:
This master cylinder is equipped with a plastic/ or aluminium reservoir. Both versions are available in a high-quality A-grade and a budget-friendly B-grade. Additional note: For safety-relevant components, such as parts of the brake system, we recommend that you use the best possible quality.

Large master cylinder for dual-circuit brake:
This master cylinder is necessary if your Beetle or Karmann Ghia has brake discs both front and rear or if a conversion to disc brakes front and rear is carried out. However, the large master cylinder can also be installed in an existing brake system without any problems, regardless of whether disc or drum brakes are used. The master cylinder has two connections for brake pressure switches. If your old master cylinder is equipped with only one brake pressure switch or you only need one brake pressure switch, you can close the second connection with a blind plug or a second brake light switch (which is not wired). If you use two brake pressure switches, you can connect an indicator light that lights up when there is a pressure difference between the two circuits, in which case you use the 3-pole switches.
