Valve spring standard.
8 pieces.
type 1 / VW Beetle engines with 25 hp and 30 hp.
Often the valve springs are only visually inspected and if they look good, they are reinstalled. It is better to measure the valve springs to check if the load on the springs is still OK.
Engines with 25 and 30 hp
New valve springs should have a pressure of 33.4 kg at 28 mm deflection with a maximum tolerance of 5%, with a maximum load loss of 10% allowed for used springs.
Engines with 1200 cc (34 hp) and type 3 (until July 1964).
These must have a pressure between 45.6 and 52.4 kg at 32.0 mm pressure. For these engines you can easily install valve springs intended for 1300, 1500 and 1600 cc engines, the slightly higher pressure is not original for the 1200 cc Type 1 engine and Type 3 engines up to July 1964, but can not hurt.
1300, 1500 and 1600 cc engines.
The pressure gauge should read between 53.2 and 61.2 cc at 31.0 mm compression.
As you can see, the measurement must be done quite accurately. So you won't be surprised to find that most cylinder heads need new valve springs if they are older.
Assembly: The side where the coils are compressed the most is the cylinder head side.
