Valve spring, standard.
8 pieces.
Type 1 / VW Beetle engines with 25 hp and 30 hp.
Often the valve springs are only checked visually, and if they look good they are refitted. It is better to measure the valve springs to check whether the load of the springs is still correct.
Engines with 25 and 30 hp
New valve springs should have a pressure of 33.4 kg at 28 mm compression with a tolerance of maximum 5%, whereby for used springs a maximum load loss of 10% is permitted.
Engines with 1200 cc (34 hp) and Type 3 (up to July 1964)
These must have a pressure between 45.6 and 52.4 kg at 32.0 mm compression. For these engines you can easily fit valve springs intended for 1300, 1500 and 1600 cc engines; the slightly higher pressure is not original for the 1200 cc Type 1 engine and the Type 3 engines up to July 1964, but cannot do any harm.
Engines with 1300, 1500 and 1600 cc
The gauge should read between 53.2 and 61.2 kg at 31.0 mm compression.
As you can see, the measurement has to be carried out quite precisely. It will therefore not surprise you that most cylinder heads need new valve springs when they are older.
Fitting: The side where the coils are pressed together most tightly is the cylinder head side.
