When building a faster Type 1 or Type 3 engine, not only the choice of displacement or camshaft is important - there is much more to it. For example, the cam followers must match the camshaft not only in material but also in size. The sharper the camshaft, the larger the surface of the cam follower must be. With a normal camshaft a 28 mm cam follower (standard size) can easily be sufficient, but with a sharper camshaft the surface can be too small and must be increased to a larger area (30 or 31 mm). We strive to save as much weight as possible - what is not there does not have to be set in motion, which results in more power.
All cam followers are made in one piece from chrome-molybdenum aluminum, which means they weigh less and are also stronger. An exception are the Engle cam followers, which are designated "heavy duty" and can withstand greater forces without increasing or decreasing the weight. The EMPI cam followers are fitted as standard with an additional oil bore that provides pressure lubrication between cam follower and cam, which is no superfluous luxury when increasing engine speed. With these followers it is necessary to fit a stronger oil pump.
On Type 4 engines you have the choice between mechanical and hydraulic cam followers (self-adjusting). Those engaged in serious tuning work prefer a mechanical cam follower over a hydraulic one, in order to be able to set the valve clearance themselves. The mechanical cam followers, like the EMPI cam followers for Type 1 and Type 3 engines, are fitted with an additional oil bore that provides pressure lubrication between cam follower and cam.
When choosing a cam follower it is important that it is of the same brand as your camshaft. The material from which the camshaft and cam followers are made determines the running characteristics of these parts. Using a cam follower brand other than the camshaft creates the possibility that these parts interact and cause irreparable damage. Engle, EMPI and Webcam advise using cam followers from the same maker; if this cannot be proven (both camshaft and cam followers must be listed on the same invoice), no warranty claims can be made. All cam followers are supplied in sets of 8 pieces.

It is almost a necessity to install all moving parts into the engine with assembly lube during an overhaul; this prevents premature wear during running-in. Oil is thin and does not stay in place, so it is not suitable for overhaul work; assembly paste, on the other hand, protects all parts during the first hours of operation. To hold the cam follower in place during the work, there are special cam follower clamps. If you have never done it before, you will try without these clamps, but believe us, it is a small investment for incredible ease - just try holding 4 cam followers at the same time.
