When fitting a new camshaft it is advisable to also replace the cam followers, as they wear against each other. If the old cam followers are worn (flat or even hollow), they must be replaced (new cam followers are always ground round). We know mechanical cam followers, on which the valve clearance must be set manually, and hydraulic cam followers, fitted with an automatic adjustment mechanism.

The cam followers should never be replaced individually, but always all eight at the same time. Understandable, because they are all the same age and will therefore wear evenly.

During fitting do not use engine oil, but only assembly paste (available separately from us); this paste provides good lubrication in the first minutes to prevent immediate wear. The assembly paste is flushed away by the engine oil, which then takes over this task.

During the first start the surfaces should wear against each other, so the engine should not go below 1500 rpm. Make sure the engine runs at 2000 rpm for the first 10 to 15 minutes. Avoid unnecessary idling for the first 500 km and keep the engine speed slightly on the high side (approx. 1000 rpm).

The cam followers for the 25 and 30 hp Type 1 engines differ from all others; they are one-piece with the pushrods, but the way of fitting and turning is the same.

Attention: If a non-standard camshaft is fitted (faster camshaft), it is important to fit the cam followers recommended by the manufacturer. The material from which the camshaft and cam followers are made is decisive for this. If it is too hard or too soft, the parts seize against each other and cause irreparable damage to camshaft and cam followers. Warranty is therefore only granted if the camshaft and cam followers are listed on a single invoice.

Special cam follower clamps are available to hold the cam follower in place during the work. If you have never done it before, you will try without these clamps, but believe us, it is a small investment for incredible ease. Try holding 4 cam followers at the same time.
