Sudden grabbing of the clutch disc despite a correctly adjusted clutch is often due to a worn pressure plate. A rattling noise when disengaging can also be the cause. When replacing the pressure unit, the release bearing must often be replaced too, and it is also advisable to replace the clutch disc at the same time; then you can be sure the whole system works properly.
All pressure plates are fitted with pressure fingers (diaphragm). It is quite possible that your old pressure unit looks different (fitted with pressure arms). This is no problem as long as the diameter and the presence or absence of a slip ring are correct. Diaphragm pressure units are more modern and more evenly assembled than older pressure-arm types. Do not forget to tighten the bolts of the pressure unit crosswise to the correct torque. Consult your workshop manual for this.
The stated size is the diameter of the pressure plate. Check this before ordering. It can happen that your complete flywheel or engine has been replaced by a different type. By measuring the pressure plate or clutch disc you make sure you order the correct one. The pressure unit is factory-coated with an anti-corrosion layer. Only the pressure plate needs to be greased, so that the rest stays protected against corrosion.
Note: Separate pressure units are not available for every model year or VW model, but only as a clutch unit (release bearing, clutch disc and pressure unit).
