Replacing the generator belt pulley is necessary in most cases if you deformed the old pulley during removal, or if the pulley nut was not tightened correctly (60 Nm), causing play and failure of both parts. But for most of us appearance will be the main reason - a rusty pulley is simply not a nice sight. Before ordering a new pulley, first check which dynamo or generator you have and, if necessary, measure the diameter; this is an important factor for choosing the right pulley. Between the pulley halves there are shim rings. By removing or adding shim rings, the V-belt can be tensioned. If you can push the V-belt about 1.5 cm with your thumb, the tension is correct. Also order a set of shim rings and possibly a new key. The key sits in the generator shaft and ensures the pulley is fixed to the shaft. This part is available in a black or chrome finish and has a high-quality powder coating. It is advisable to remove the powder coating on the inside so that fitting onto the generator shaft is smooth.
