The seal between the alternator/generator stand and the crankcase is a paper gasket on older Type 1 engines, which was later replaced with a baffle plate that not only serves as a seal but also prevents oil from splashing.

Type 3 engines have this seal between the crankcase and the crankcase breather. On older engines it is the same as on the Type 1 with just a separate gasket. In the later years the baffle plate was added, so both are used.
