Replacement of the generator pulley will in most cases be necessary if you have deformed the old pulley during removal or if the pulley nut was not tightened correctly (60 Nm), causing play and failure of both parts. But for most of us the appearance will be the most important argument; a rusty pulley is simply not a nice sight. Before ordering a new pulley, first check which dynamo or generator you have and, if necessary, measure the diameter; this is an important factor for the correct choice of pulley. Between the pulley halves there are shims. By removing or adding shims the drive belt can be tensioned. If you can push the drive belt about 1.5 cm with your thumb, the tension is correct. Also order a set of shims and possibly a new key. The key is located in the shaft of the generator and ensures that the pulley is fastened to the shaft. This component is available in a black or chrome version and has a high-quality powder coating. It is advisable to remove the powder coating on the inside, so that fitting on the generator shaft is smooth.
