At every engine overhaul you have to replace all bearings, including the camshaft bearings. From 8/1965 Volkswagen only used camshaft bearings for this purpose. At that time it was normal for an engine to need overhauling quite soon. The engine service life was extended when Volkswagen decided to run the camshaft in bearings. When using dual valve springs, but also with heavier springs, the side forces on the camshaft become much greater, causing more wear on the bearings and the crankcase than normal. To counteract this, you can now fit Type 1, Type 3 and CT/CZ engines with so-called "double thrust" camshaft bearings, which Volkswagen used as standard in the water-cooled boxer engines and the last Mexican Type 1 engines. Double thrust camshaft bearings have a raised edge on both bearing halves instead of on one side, so a higher load can be applied to the camshaft without further consequences. A small modification to the crankcase is therefore necessary. Oversize camshaft bearings are found mainly in engines that were overhauled by Volkswagen at the time and can be recognized by the deeply stamped engine number. For fitting we recommend using assembly paste, which ensures good lubrication during run-in and prevents premature wear.

Note: in most cases you need standard bearings, but always measure them before ordering. Please note that camshaft bearings in opened packaging cannot be returned either.
