Flywheel Standard

Flywheel 200 mm / 130 teeth.
Type 1 / VW Beetle engines.
VW Type 3 engines.

If you want to build a 1600 cc engine based on a 1300 cc engine, you have to replace the cylinders and pistons and machine the cylinder heads (or fit new ones), but also make sure you replace the flywheel with a 200 mm version.

If you keep driving with the old 180 mm flywheel, you have to replace the clutch disc regularly, as it is not designed for higher power. So be careful and fit a 200 mm flywheel with 130 teeth straight away.

The designation 200 mm comes from the diameter of the clutch disc to be used, not from the diameter of the flywheel itself. It may therefore be obvious that you also have to use a 200 mm clutch disc and pressure plate (available in our shop).

The flywheel must not be fitted without measuring the axial play of the crankshaft; a correct setting is very important to avoid damaging the bearing. The axial play must be between 0.07 and 0.13 mm (it can be measured with a dial gauge). The play is set with adjusting rings behind the flywheel; never more than 3 rings can be used, so they are also available in various thicknesses (also available in our shop).

In addition to this standard flywheel, it is also available in a lighter version, which helps to increase the power of tuned engines that run at higher revs.

Note:

Before fitting, check that the dowel pins do not have too much play, because too much play can cause the flywheel to come loose, which can cause enormous damage. With this new flywheel only use a crankshaft seal without an additional crankshaft lip; references 01639 or 01640 are best suited for this. Using a seal with an additional retaining lip will inevitably lead to a leak. The notch of the seal starts earlier than the original, which makes the connection stronger, but has the disadvantage that the diameter is increased where the additional lip has to do its job and breaks.
