Type 1 / VW Beetle engine 1600 - all years.
Type 3 engine - from 8/1962 onwards.
A lighter flywheel helps to increase power, but is more suitable for engines that run at higher revs.
The 200 mm flywheel of the Type 1 and Type 3 engines is suitable for a connection with 8 dowel pins on the crankshaft (this flywheel also fits the 4 original pins). As one of the 8 holes is drilled asymmetrically, the flywheel only fits the crankshaft in one way (on all crankshafts with counterweights this works the same way), which is very important to balance the crankshaft with pulley and flywheel. If you want to fit the standard 8-dowel crankshaft with the special drilling tool, please take the asymmetric drilling of the holes into account.
The Type 4 flywheels are fitted with bolts and have a single bolt that ensures the flywheel can only be fitted in one direction. On all flywheels it is recommended to balance the flywheel with the crankshaft and the pulley, which minimises pressure and vibrations on the main bearings. Type 4 flywheels are available for 215 and 228 mm clutch discs; an adapted flywheel is also available for a 200 mm clutch disc. This allows a Type 4 engine to be fitted to a Type 1 or Type 3 gearbox without having to change the gearbox.
Note for flywheels 01504 and 04504 (Type 1 and Type 3 engines):
Before fitting, check that the dowel pins do not have too much play, because too much play can cause the flywheel to come loose. This leads to enormous engine damage. With this flywheel only use a crankshaft seal without an additional lip (dust protection). References 01639 or 01640 are best suited for this purpose. Using a seal with an additional lip (anti-dust) will inevitably lead to leaks. The notch of the running surface starts earlier than the original, which makes the connection stronger, but has the disadvantage that the diameter is increased where the additional lip has to do its job and will break.
