Type 1 engine, 1500 cc, single port.
Engine code: H
Newly rebuilt engine.
Crankcase fully overhauled.
200 mm flywheel / 12 volt.
Suitable for:
VW Beetle
Karmann Ghia
T1 Bus
VW Type 181 (Thing)
The engine is built specially for you, so the delivery time is at least 3 weeks.
The engine overhaul includes, among others, the following operations:
- Careful inspection and cleaning of the crankcase.
- Inspection and, where necessary, replacement of all crankcase wear parts.
- Installation of a new crankshaft.
- Reconditioned or new connecting rods.
- New connecting rod bearing bushes.
- New reinforced main bearing set.
- New drive gear on the crankshaft.
- New lifters (cam followers).
- New oil pump including oil pump cover.
- New flywheel.
- New piston and cylinder set.
- New piston rings.
- New cylinder heads, with the valves checked for leak-tightness before assembly.
- New stainless steel pushrod tubes.
- New gaskets, crankcase cover, valve covers with clips, and spark plugs.
- Reconditioned rocker shaft with new valve adjusting screws and nuts, new spring washers and locking clips.
If you are looking for a reconditioned engine, you have come to the right place.
Standard overhaul engines (rotating assembly)
The engine consists of the so-called "rotating assembly", i.e. the complete case with cylinders and cylinder heads. The rest of the engine build must be carried over from your old engine. It is very important that the assembly and tuning of the new overhaul engine is carried out by an experienced mechanic with good knowledge of the air-cooled Volkswagen engine. Incorrect assembly and/or tuning can cause serious engine damage, which is not covered by our 2-year warranty. Regular maintenance of the engine also requires skill and experience. If you prefer a completely new original crankcase instead of a reconditioned one, this is possible for a number of engines. With a new case it is no longer visible that it is a rebuilt engine, and the case has the original factory dimensions.
All overhaul engines are suitable for unleaded fuel. Running on LPG is at your own risk. The problem with LPG and our air-cooled engines is temperature: the engine runs hotter than on petrol, which is undesirable. The standard air-cooled boxer engine must be fully cooled, and any temperature increase is undesirable. If you run on LPG, any form of warranty is void.
What you can expect
Due to rising prices, in the past we supplied not only our own engines but also overhauled engines from other companies as a cheaper alternative. However, those engines did not meet the expectations of a reconditioned engine, which is why in 2010 we decided to supply only engines that meet our high quality standards 100%, with price coming second. Quality over quantity fully applies to our overhaul engines. A new engine should only have to be bought once, followed by many years of carefree driving. Our reconditioned engines have already proven themselves in this respect.
A good overhaul goes far beyond simply assembling new bearings, cylinders, pistons and cylinder heads. Once the old engine is disassembled, the parts are inspected and sorted, and any unusual wear or deviations are investigated. The reusable parts are then cleaned, re-measured, tested and finally reconditioned. The tolerances specified by VW are of course closely monitored.
To give just one example: the crankcase is align-bored. It is rare to find the crankcase of a used engine still within tolerance after measuring the bearing seats. Line boring and oversized bearings are the only way to build a reliable engine; only new bearings can significantly extend the engine's service life. The first year, or the first few years depending on mileage, may not cause many problems, but once the engine has covered more miles, problems can arise. This naturally also applies to other parts of the engine, so it is very important that each part is inspected and assessed individually. Experience and know-how are the key to success - only in this way can a good reconditioned engine be delivered.
The reconditioned Paruzzi engines are fitted with the following operations and/or parts:
- During the crankcase overhaul, the crankcase is cleaned and checked for cracks.
- All wear points are inspected.
- The crankcase is machined by means of line boring, axial bearing seats and cylinder seating surfaces.
- Where applicable or desired, a new original crankcase is used, in which case the points above do not apply.
- Original crankshaft, machined or new.
- Reconditioned connecting rods (shot-blasted, new custom-made rod bearing shells) or new connecting rods.
- New bearings, always fitting the so-called "steel-backed" bearings.
- New camshaft for 1600 cc engines and, for other engines, a matched camshaft where the original is in good condition.
- New drive pinion on the crankshaft.
- New lifters.
- New oil pump with oil pump cover.
- New or machined flywheel.
- New original springs for the oil pressure lifters.
- New piston and cylinder sets.
- New cylinder heads, with the valves checked for leak-tightness before assembly.
- New stainless steel pushrod tubes.
- New gaskets, original crankcase cover, original valve covers with clips, and spark plugs.
- Reconditioned rocker shafts with new valve tab nuts and bolts, new (spring-loaded) rings and original hose clamps.
The engine is fully assembled with a special synthetic assembly paste, which ensures that the moving parts are properly lubricated when the engine is first started. If engine oil were used instead, there would be little or no lubrication at start-up, because the oil would have drained away over time.
The compression ratio is calculated separately for each cylinder, so that it is exactly the same for all cylinders (which is not the same as compression pressure). On standard engines the compression ratio is set to the original value. On high-performance engines this value is higher, to achieve better engine efficiency.
