Type 1 engine 1600cc single port.
Engine code: B
Newly rebuilt engine.
New crankcase.
200 mm flywheel / 12 volt.
Suitable for:
VW Beetle
Karmann Ghia
The engine is built specially for you, so the delivery time is at least 3 weeks.
The overhaul of the engine includes, among others, the following operations:
- Use of a new crankcase.
- Fitting of a new crankshaft.
- Reconditioned or new connecting rods.
- New connecting rod bearing bushes.
- New reinforced main bearing set.
- New drive gear on the crankshaft.
- New cam followers.
- New oil pump including oil pump cover.
- New flywheel.
- New piston and cylinder set.
- New piston rings.
- New cylinder heads, on which the valves are checked for tightness before assembly.
- New stainless steel pushrod tubes.
- New gaskets, crankcase cover, valve covers with brackets and spark plugs.
- Reconditioned rocker shaft with new valve adjusting screws and nuts, new spring washers and circlips.
If you are looking for a reconditioned engine, you have come to the right place.
Standard overhaul engines (rotating part)
The engine consists of the so-called "rotating part", i.e. the complete case with cylinders and cylinder heads. The rest of the engine build must be transferred from the old engine. It is very important that the build and setting of the new overhaul engine is carried out by an experienced mechanic with good knowledge of the air-cooled Volkswagen engine. Incorrect assembly and/or setting can lead to considerable engine damage, which is not covered by our 2-year warranty. Regular maintenance of the engine also requires skills and experience. If you prefer a completely new original crankcase instead of a reconditioned crankcase, this is possible for a number of engines. With a new case it is no longer visible that it is an overhauled engine, and the case has the original factory dimensions.
All overhaul engines are suitable for unleaded petrol. Driving on LPG is at your own risk. The problem with LPG and our air-cooled engines is the temperature. The engine heats up more than when driving on petrol, and that is something undesirable. The standard air-cooled boxer engine must be fully cooled, and any form of temperature rise is undesirable. If you drive on LPG, any form of warranty becomes void.
What you can expect
Due to rising prices we have in the past not only supplied our own engines, but also overhauled engines from other companies as a cheaper alternative. However, these engines did not meet the expectations of an overhauled engine, which is why in 2010 we decided to supply only engines that meet our high quality standards 100%, and where price comes second. Quality over quantity fully applies to our overhaul engines. A new engine should only be bought once, after which many years of carefree driving should follow. Our overhauled engines have already proven themselves in this respect.
A good overhaul goes far beyond simply assembling new bearings, cylinders, pistons and cylinder heads. Once the old engine is disassembled, the parts are inspected and sorted, and strange wear marks or deviations are investigated. Then the reusable parts are cleaned, re-measured, checked and finally reconditioned. The tolerances prescribed by VW are of course closely monitored.
To give just one example: the crankcase is align-bored. It is rare to see the crankcase of a used engine that is still within tolerance after the bearing seat measurement. Line boring and oversized bearings are the only way to build a reliable engine. In this case only new bearings can significantly extend the life of the engine. The first year or years, depending on the mileage driven, may not cause many problems, but when the engine has covered more kilometers, problems can occur. This example naturally also applies to other parts of the engine. That is why it is very important that each engine part is individually examined and assessed. Experience and know-how are the key to success. Only in this way can a good overhauled engine be supplied.
The overhauled Paruzzi engines are fitted with the following operations and/or parts:
- During the overhaul of the crankcase, the crankcase is cleaned and checked for cracks.
- All wear points are checked.
- The crankcase is machined by means of line boring, axial seat bearing and cylinder seating surfaces.
- If applicable or desired, a new original crankcase is used, in which case the above points do not apply.
- Original crankshaft machined or new.
- Reconditioned connecting rods (shot blasting, new custom rod rings) or new connecting rods.
- New bearings, with the so-called "steel-backed" bearings always fitted.
- New camshaft for 1600cc engines, and for other engines a controlled camshaft if in good condition.
- New drive pinion on the crankshaft.
- New cam followers.
- New oil pump with oil pump cover.
- New or machined flywheel.
- New original springs for oil pressure tappets.
- New pistons and cylinder sets.
- New cylinder heads, on which the valves are checked for tightness before assembly.
- New stainless steel pushrod tubes.
- New gaskets, original crankcase cover, original valve covers with brackets and spark plugs.
- Reconditioned rocker shafts with new valve tab nuts and screws, new rings (spring-loaded) and original hose clamps.
The engine is fully assembled with a special synthetic assembly paste, which ensures that the moving parts are properly lubricated at the first start of the engine. If engine oil had been used for this, there would be little or no lubrication at start-up, since the oil has had no fuel for a long time.
The compression ratio is calculated separately for each cylinder, so that it is exactly the same for all cylinders (which is not the same as compression pressure). On standard engines the compression ratio is set to the original value. On high-performance engines this value is higher, to achieve better engine efficiency.
