When the clearance between the piston pin and the connecting rod bearing approaches the wear limit of 0.04 mm, both the piston pin and the connecting rod bearing must be replaced.
Many people then opt for a complete piston and cylinder set to replace everything at once, even though this may not be necessary. If the pistons and cylinders are otherwise within wear limits, replacing the piston pin with a new connecting rod bearing (and possibly a set of new piston rings) is enough.
Keep in mind that replacing the connecting rod bearing is not a "plug-and-play" job. After the bearing is pressed in, it must be honed to the correct size.
