Every Volkswagen Beetle is fitted from the factory with an exterior mirror on the driver''s side. The mirror on the passenger side was available as an option and was only occasionally factory-fitted on special versions.

On Volkswagen Beetles from 1968 the mirror is screwed into the door, and on the convertible version into the window frame. Unfortunately, on the vehicles produced in Germany, Volkswagen did not fit the passenger door with a mounting provision from the factory. The Beetles later produced in Mexico, however, were fitted with one. To fit the passenger-side mirror, a hole must be drilled in exactly the same position and size as on the driver''s door. Copy the exact position of the mirror mounting hole from the driver''s door to the passenger door. Drill a hole with a tapered drill and let it rotate slowly to avoid unnecessary heat that could discolor the paint. Treat the newly made hole against rust. If you have copied the hole exactly, you will find the spot where this special mirror nut fits from the inside. Thanks to the special design of the nut, it sits firmly and can no longer turn. When the mirror is removed, the nut stays in place.
