Lock nuts today are often secured with an internal plastic insert. Lock nuts have existed in this form for many years, but in some applications Volkswagen has long used the classic method of fastening: castle nuts secured with a cotter pin.

The reason for using castle nuts may be that the nut can be reused, which is not possible with a modern lock nut. The only thing you have to replace on reassembly is the cotter pin.

It is important that the shaft it screws onto has a hole for a cotter pin. If this is not the case, you must use a modern lock nut (available separately in our shop).
