Lock nuts are nowadays often secured with an internal plastic insert. Lock nuts have existed in this form for many years, but in some applications Volkswagen has for a very long time used the classic form of fastening: castle nuts secured with a split pin.

The reason for using castle nuts may be that the nut can be reused, which is not possible with a modern lock nut. It is important that the shaft it is screwed onto has a hole for a split pin. If this is not the case, you have to use a modern lock nut.
