Carburetor set Weber 32/36 mm DFEV.
Type 1 / VW Beetle dual port engines.
Progressive carburetor sets
The Weber DFEV 32/36 and EMPI EPC 32/36F carburetors are two-stage (progressive) carburetors that offer big advantages over the original. Up to half throttle you drive very economically with a small 32 mm carburetor; from half to full throttle the second stage opens and you have two venturis, the 32 and the 36 mm together. Thanks to the better filling, the second stage delivers much more power.
The carburetor set for the Type 1 engine is only suitable for 1300 and 1600 cc dual-intake engines; the intake manifold ends must be reused. Please note that only the intake manifold ends of a 1600 cc engine fit the manifold - if you do not have them, order them separately. The supplied center manifold must be able to move freely between the manifold ends; if not, cut it to the correct length. If the central intake tube is jammed between them, the manifold ends will not seal against the cylinder head. Also make sure the electric choke cannot touch the fan shroud and cause a short circuit; use tape against the fan shroud to prevent this. Also make sure the carburetor is properly earthed by fitting the bracket as described.
On Type 4 engines the side-draft carburetors are replaced by this two-stage 32/36 carburetor, allowing more economical driving without losing engine power.
We recommend fitting a 009 or 123 distributor; only then can you reach the maximum the carburetor can offer. As with all carburetors, and certainly with carburetors that were never factory-fitted, it is all about the correct jetting and adjustment. If you do not have the right knowledge, have your engine tuned on a dyno, then you can be sure you get a package that works perfectly with the advantages you wanted.
The sets are available with a Weber DFEV 32/36 or EMPI EPC 32/36F carburetor. Weber has proven its quality extensively. The EMPI EPC 32/36 is a copy of the Weber and has become more and more popular in recent years - not only because of the lower price, but also because several independent tests have proven that EMPI is not inferior to the Weber; HPMX carburetors even test better than the Weber original. The only thing that cannot be tested yet is service life, which is undoubtedly established for Weber and which we will only know for EMPI in a few years. The sets consist of the following parts, most of which are also available individually.
- Weber 32/36 or EMPI EPC 32/36F two-stage carburetor
- air filter
- electric choke
- intake manifold (complete for Type 4, and for Type 1 using existing manifold ends)
- fuel hose
- gaskets and mounting hardware
- fitting instructions

Spare parts
If you need spare parts later, that is no problem - most parts are also available individually and can be used to assemble your own set. Jets are available in our shop in various sizes. Individual carburetors are only available from Weber; EMPI carburetors are only available in sets.
Options
A 009 or 123 distributor is highly recommended. The carburetors must also be adjusted correctly - if you want maximum power with the lowest possible consumption, you cannot avoid adjusting the jetting. For Type 1 engines you must use 1600 cc manifold ends; if you do not have them, order them separately. It is also advisable to choose an exhaust system designed for higher power. If you cannot find a suitable one, let us know and we will help you find an exhaust that suits your needs and/or budget.
