The roof rack was the first accessory available for the car, and it was much the same for our classic Volkswagen. Several manufacturers developed ways to carry extra luggage. Unfortunately most have now stopped producing luggage racks for our classic, but fortunately there are still specialists who bring reproductions or their own creations to market:

"Classic" roof rack:

These popular roof racks are fastened with clamps around the rain gutter and come with authentic wooden slats. You can choose between a gray-painted steel or a stainless steel frame. For the VW Bus rack you can choose between polished aluminum cross bars and stainless steel cross bars on the stainless version. The gray-painted frame is available just like back in the day, while the polished stainless steel frame is an improvement - with the latter, rust problems are a thing of the past. Volkswagen Beetle luggage racks can be used for all model years except the convertible. The VW Bus racks up to 7/1979 are not suitable for models with a high roof.

"Vintage" roof rack:

The "Classic" roof racks have a rather square shape, whereas our Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia can hardly be called square. With this in mind, the makers of the "Vintage" rack developed a rack that follows the body contours. The result is superb: a rack with a very classic look, fully in line with the roof line, made of polished stainless steel and fitted with wooden slats that fit together like a honeycomb. It mounts to the rain gutters with the supplied (stainless steel) fitting material. Available for the Volkswagen Beetle and Karmann Ghia, except the convertible versions.

Deck lid luggage rack:

If you need more room for your luggage, the Volkswagen Beetle or Karmann Ghia can also be fitted with a rack for the rear deck lid. These racks mount between the cooling slots and, on the Volkswagen Beetle, also on the bumper brackets. Available with a chrome-plated, zinc-plated or stainless steel frame, fitted with wooden or metal slats. All racks are supplied with mounting material.
