Oil Deflector Brake Drum Rear

On swing axles the gear oil also lubricates the rear wheel bearings. In itself this is a good system; the wheel bearings do not dry out so quickly. But it also has a disadvantage, because if the rear axle seal starts to leak, the gear oil gets into the brake drum, contaminates the brake shoes, and this leads to poor braking performance.
This oil deflector catches the oil and drains it off, so that the brake linings cannot be contaminated by the gear oil.
In later years this system was revised and the bearing cover modified. In the event of an oil leak, the oil is drained through the backing plate and not into the brake drum, making the oil deflector no longer necessary.
It often happens that the oil deflector in the brake drum is no longer present on older model years; excessive corrosion meant that the oil deflector could no longer be fitted.
Preserve the safety of your brake system and refit the oil deflector in the brake drum. Should the rear axle seal start to leak, this will then have no negative effect on braking performance.
