The hydraulic pressure applied by the brake pedal pushes the wheel brake cylinders through the brake line and brake hose. The wheel brake cylinders push the brake shoes against the brake drum and slow the vehicle down.
To bleed the brake system, a bleed nipple is fitted to the wheel brake cylinder. It is also protected against corrosion by a cap.
How do you recognize a broken brake cylinder?
A broken brake cylinder can usually be recognized by a brake fluid leak, or by one or two pistons being stuck in the housing due to corrosion (rust). If you notice it in time, often only the protective boot is filled with brake fluid; if you discover the leak late and the inside of the brake drum is completely greasy, it is advisable to replace the brake linings. The brake lining absorbs the brake fluid like a sponge and negatively affects the braking force.
The disadvantage of the brake linings is that they can break, in which case replacing the complete brake cylinder is the only solution.
Caution: The brake cylinders must never be fitted dry; every internal part must be coated with a thin layer of brake cylinder paste. You might think that the new brake parts are already treated with paste at the factory, but this is not always the case. You must check this yourself before assembling the part.
