The ignition spark, led via the distributor to the spark plug, must be guided optimally. If the rotor is worn or burned, it can no longer conduct the spark properly via the distributor cap to the spark plug, resulting in poorer performance.

Check every 5,000 km whether the rotor is still intact and replace it if necessary. It is recommended to replace both the rotor and the distributor cap, as these two parts wear against each other.

Bosch distributors were fitted to most Volkswagens (Bosch logo and part number always stated). In recent years imitation distributors resembling the Bosch original have appeared, without Bosch or VW logo. At the start of the 1960s Volkswagen also used Garbe-Lahmeyer distributors (VW part numbers and logo, but their own cap, rotor, contact points and capacitor). The Bosch 009 and 050 distributors are used only for performance engines and are 100% centrifugal. The 123 is an electronic ignition system that replaces the mechanical system and is practically maintenance-free.
